I changed the example to less controversial ones.

Also I removed the part about voluntary submission. There is no requirement under international law that an area must have voluntarily submitted to another power to be part of that nations territory. The example of American Samoa was particularly bad since the United States just took it, and the consent of the local people was never an issue.
