- 1787 - The text of the United States Constitution was finalized in Philadelphia.
- 1809 - The Treaty of Fredrikshamn concluded the Finnish War between Russia and Sweden, and Finland became an autonomous Grand Duchy under Czar Alexander I.
- 1894 - Japanese and Chinese navies clashed at Battle of Yalu River, the largest naval engagement of the First Sino-Japanese War.
- 1976 - The first Space Shuttle, Enterprise, was unveiled by NASA.
- 1978 - The Camp David Accords were signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin.
