Word Meaning

My Arabic is close to non-existent. Does the word Salaf really mean "predecessor"? Isn't the term from one of the canons (Quran, Sunna, Seerah) and thus from The Prophet's time? (Which would make it odd to mean "predecessor".)

Reversion to older version
