Is the South China Sea part of the Pacific? It's not mentioned anywhere in the article. --seav 08:09, Oct 15, 2003 (UTC)

• I would think it is. It certainly don't belong to the Indian Ocean, and it's no where near the Arctic Ocean ... lol. I believe that South China Sea is somewhat similar to the Mediterranean Sea in a sense that they are quite isolated from the oceans and have different properties of their own. — LegolasGreenleaf 00:25, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC)

Australia "in" the Pacific?

Is it fair to say Australia is "in" the Pacific, when more than half of its coastline is along the Indian Ocean? It certainly borders on the Pacific, but so does North America and all its nations. In fact, one could argue that, by percentage of total border, Mexico is much more "in" the Pacific than Australia. ☺ -- Jeff Q

I came here to ask the same question exactly; it strikes me that Australia bounds the Pacific but is not "in" it. I will post the question in Talk:Australia. Sharkford 20:12, 2004 Oct 18 (UTC)

While not a geographer, I cannot but agree. The only parts of Australia in the Pacific are islands off the mainland. Also, NZ is mentioned as a "large island group" but I would have thought that the islands of Borneo and New Guinea were larger. NZ is definitely the largest island group outside the continental shelves bordering the Pacific. --CloudSurfer 06:57, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

North Pacific and South Pacific

How about separate pages for both North Pacific, which we seem not to have yet, and South Pacific, which we seem to have? Linked to and from this article, of course. The phrases are used on their own from time to time, not only in colloquial speech but also in the names of organisations. (I haven't checked whether there's any equivalent discussion for Atlantic; but the same might apply even more there because of the shorter boundary.) Robin Patterson 04:11, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)

The article on South Pacific refers to the musical by the same name, not the region. --Benc 06:02, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)
