January 27: today is Holocaust Memorial Day
- 1944 - World War II: The two year Siege of Leningrad was lifted.
- 1945 - World War II: The Red Army arrived at Auschwitz and Birkenau in Poland and found the Nazi concentration camp where 1.1-1.5 million people were murdered.
- 1951 - Nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site began with a one-kiloton bomb dropped on Frenchman Flats.
- 1967 - Astronauts Gus Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee were killed in a fire during a test of the Apollo 1 spacecraft at the Kennedy Space Center.

Thank you Andy, this newbie will be bolder next time when he feels sure. However, I'm unsure about Bridget Fonda whoe year of birth conflicts with that on her biog. 1964 or 1974. I'll leave it to the wise. Pip Wilson
1903 - John Carew Eccles, psychologist, winner of Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1963, (d. 1997) .... should read neurophysiologist, not pyschologist.

Contradictory dates: Both the death of Mahalia Jackson and the liberation of Auschwitz. I've seen both January 26 and January 27. Can somebody shed some light? -- Zoe
