Merge of public holiday

I propose holiday and public holiday be merged into a single article. Was there suppose to be a difference between these 2 articles?

Merging might be a good idea. You could add the two articles to the list of Duplicate articles. --KF 07:13 18 May 2003 (UTC)

Holidays vs. marker days

Are things like Grandparents Day really holidays? In my mind there is a difference between a holiday and a simple marker day. I would contend that if nobody takes a day off work for this day then it is not a holiday. Who disagrees? DJ Clayworth 15:26, 12 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I disagree. In its broadest sense a holiday is a holy day and a day for celebrating some event, person or thing. Taking the day off work is not a requirement, the celebration is. However, it is customary for employers, or the state, to declare that work is not done on certain holidays because their employees and/or customers/clients would be distracted by missing the celebrations and it is not a very productive workday. Hence taking the day off is associated with a holiday. Those commemoration or celebration days that are not public holidays - when people are given the day off work - are stil holidays in the broadest sense and should be mentioned. Otherwise we will have multiple articles on the same subject. kiwiinapanic 02:10, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

National holidays' list

The stuff in the National holidays section of this page should probably be updated with the new additions caused by the relevant changes in WikiProject Countries, and moved to a separate page, e.g. List of holidays by country. --Shallot 17:38, 24 May 2004 (UTC)

Done now. --Joy [shallot] 20:15, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
