I've heard this mushroom can be made considerably less toxic by cooking it first.

Reply to above: That's because the ibotenic acid is converted to muscimol by cooking. Muscimol doesn't produce the toxic effects of ibotenic acid. Also, I wonder if amanita var. guessowii is mistaken for amanita var. formosa in the US? Look at the pictures: http://pluto.njcc.com/~ret/amanita/species/muscgues.html - Exspecto
